Andy Jeffreys

VSP Processing

Background: Borehole Seismic Processing
Industry Experience: 39 Years

Andy has been processing VSPs since 1982, initially for Seismograph Service Ltd in Kent, UK, where he was made a group leader in 1985. Overseas postings included Indonesia and Australia and in 1990 he opened the important new remote processing office in Aberdeen to better service local clients. The introduction of the multi-level tool led to a significant loss of market share for SSL, and as a consequence Andy moved to READ Well Services Ltd in 1992, working in Aberdeen and Oslo. Andy was the VSP Processing Supervisor and senior VSP processor for the UK processing division, with ultimate responsibility for all processing provided by RWS to UK clients including all high-tech surveys, 3DVSP, and fast turnaround P- & S-wave walkaway processing. Andy generated substantial processing for READ on the back of VSP acquisition by the wireline company, something rarely seen in the 1990s. READ gradually lost market share due to acquisition unreliability and Andy left in 2000 to open an Aberdeen office for newly formed SeiScan GeoData Ltd, undertaking third party processing only. Following SeiScan’s demise in 2002 Andy formed Zebra Geosciences Ltd with the key VSP processing personel.

In 2004 Andy left Zebra to start his own company Upwave Limited following software development and financial disagreements. By this stage it was becoming obvious that many Clients wished to continue using Andy for VSP processing due to his reputation for personal service, high quality, rapid turnaround and flexibility. Upwave Limited operates from an office in North Yorkshire, England (formerly Aberdeenshire). VSP data processing is undertaken on a laptop and the processing capability is therefore fully mobile.

To date Upwave has processed over 400 VSP datasets. Upwave processes all borehole seismic VSP configurations from checkshot surveys through conventional rig source and vertical incidence VSPs to 2D and 3D walkaway VSPs. Staff continuity ensures consistent processing quality and both current surveys and VSP reprocessing projects are undertaken. VSP data processing is done on a laptop, with high speed internet access enabling efficient data transfer. The processing software used is VSProwess, supplied by VSProwess Limited. Upwave Limited has ISO 9001 accreditation.

Sandy joined Schlumberger in 1990 working as a crew member for both open and cased-hole services. His skills were quickly recognised and moved quickly through the ranks including positions as field engineer, engineer in charge, field services manager, integrated project manager, new technology manager and finishing his time with Schlumberger a business development manager in 2015.

We can safely say that Sandy knows the wireline business from the ground up, with cased-hole a focus. He is currently providing this cased-hole logging support to one&zero on a consultancy basis and is proving a valuable member of the team.

He has international experience having worked in the UK, Caspian and Middle East North Africa regions.
